Bye 2017 – 4 things I learned this year

2018 is tomorrow. Isn’t that crazy? 20 freakin 18.   What did you accomplish in 2017? Were you all that you wanted to be? Am I quoting the Army here? I’m not sure. But it’s weird right? A whole year. You see it a lot […]

10 ridiculous elf on the shelf ideas

The subtle art of not giving a fuck – book review

The subtle art of not giving a fuck – book review

Okay. So this book, in one word. Fucking brilliant. Damnit. Two words then.

I already feel like I do a pretty good job at not “giving a fuck”, so this book really spoke to me. I know, I know. Allison – this a mom blog. A parenting blog. What does this have anything to do with parenting. Well, it does. Can you just trust me?

Also, it’s $10 on Amazon – dude –

Now, let’s be honest here, I am a sucker for self-improvement books. I always have been. But not many of them last. Or, ya know, “stick”.

You read them and you’re all, YES! I’m ready to be happy all the time and work my ass off to get what I want in life. And then it fades. And then you’re hitting snooze 3 times each morning and skipping making your monthly goals and no longer doing morning yoga each day.

This is the kind of book that will hit you hard. Mark Manson super honest (super fucky) and will tell you how it is. This book won’t make you happy. It won’t make you better. It will just make you more efficient and able to focus on the things that matter. You’ll learn what you want to give a fuck about and how to give less fucks about the shit that doesn’t matter.

Did your kids eat candy canes for breakfast? What’s the big deal? Now, if you’re kids are eating candy canes for breakfast every day, then you might want to give a fuck. –That example only came to my mind because my kids, did in fact eat candy canes for breakfast this morning. They are on our christmas tree. I’ve moved the rest of them up to the top of the tree 😉

Instead of aiming for that perfect instagram worthy life, with the perfect kids, perfect husband and perfectly funny memes, Mark suggests asking the question, “What problem do you want to have?

Duh! We will all have problems. They don’t ever go away. There won’t be a time in your life when you’re like, “man, this shit is great. I have ZERO problems”. Won’t happen. So you have to choose what to care about.

“You are already choosing, in every moment of every day, what to give a fuck about, so change is as simple as choosing to give a fuck about something else. It’s really that simple. It’s just not easy.” MM

So choose what to care about and care about it deeply. Pour your heart and soul into it.

Feel scared yet? Like you have an idea of what you want to do, but you just don’t know how to do it. Okay, I’m going to quote more of the book. But this is pretty much my favorite quote –

“When I was in high school, my math teacher Mr. Packwood used to say, “If you’re suck on a problem, don’t sit there and think about it; just start working on it. Even if you don’t know what you’re doing, the simple act of working on it will eventually cause the right ideas to show up in your head.”” – MM

Scared of being wrong? Do you fear change (hand raise emoji right here)?

I am so scared of change and being wrong, but for this book to really stick and change your life, you need to change things in your life and rearrange your priorities. More quoting –

“Because here’s something that’s weird but true: we don’t actually know what a positive or negative experience is. Some of the most difficult and stressful moments of our lives also end up being the most formative and motivating. Some of the best and most gratifying experiences of our lives are also the most distracting and demotivating. Don’t trust your conception of positive/negative experiences. All that we know for certain is what hurts in the moment and what doesn’t. And that’s not worth much.” – MM

Seriously – SO FUCKING TRUE!

Okay, hopefully I didn’t quote too much and prevent you from buying or checking out this book from your local library. It’s inspirational, quick and entertaining. Even if you just do a fun drinking game where you take a sip of wine every time Manson uses the word “fuck”. It’ll be worth it.

Cheers!

XO

8 things you’ll miss after having kids

8 things you’ll miss after having kids

First off, I’m not exactly sure what my 24 year old self was thinking when I wanted to have kids. I guess it was just the natural hormones telling me “have kids!” “have kids!” “It’ll be great!”, but honestly, I don’t think I actually sat […]

The bad mom Thanksgiving

The bad mom Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is such a weird ass holiday. Ya know. You just eat a bunch of traditional foods (that honestly kinda suck and are difficult to make) and then hang out with family and then nap. I enjoy a holiday that soely revolves around eating and […]

Tips from Experienced Moms: How to get your toddler to eat healthy food

Tips from Experienced Moms: How to get your toddler to eat healthy food

Guest post time!

Beverly Chester wrote this post for me. We were friends in high school, grew up, had kids and have reconnected via social media (of course). She has all the makings of being a bad ass mom. She is a nutritionist for goodness sake. She worked with pre-school aged kids when she was in college and it looked so simple. Little did she know, when she had a kid of her own, how difficult nutrition can be for a toddler. She’s the mom of two boys (seriously how do you do it?) and also super hilarious and honest about motherhood. Here ya go – Enjoy!

So, you wanna know what it’s really like having two kids?

I have two kids. I know what it’s like now, but when I found out that I was pregnant a second time (oh shit. surprise!) and my son had only just turned 1 a few months ago, I was terrified. I couldn’t wrap my head […]

why do I not get to my desk until 9:15am?

why do I not get to my desk until 9:15am?

I work in the technology industry – in the actually technical part of the company. This means I work with 90% males. Also, it’s a start up type company, so the average age is like 26.

My desk is surrounded by these single 20 something manboys. And each morning, I get to my desk at 9:15am and I get the shit from them.

“Oh, where ya been? We’ve been waiting on you to show up” – “What, did ya sleep in today?” – “We thought you weren’t going to come in today.”

So this post is dedicated to those douche canoes. Here’s all the shit I do in the morning BEFORE 9:15am.

an honest birth story – what really happens when you have to push a human out of your vag

Why is it “an honest” and not “a honest” since H is a consonant and not a vowel? The english language is so weird.
